Donation to Sarva
It was agreed to pay the cost of the advertising for this new yoga centre in High Wycombe - £543.86. This was felt to come under the terms of our constitution in that it would be promoting Iyengar Yoga in the area.
Joe Burn
Joe is shortly leaving our area to go “up north”. A message of thanks and a card will be sent to Joe as he has done so much work over the years for ORIYI, he will be very much missed.
Astadala Yogamala Fund
£200 was sent to the Astadala Yogamala Fund as agreed at our last meeting and we have received a letter of thanks for this.
Any other business
Jon Hunt then asked a question of the Committee “What are the aims and objectives of ORIYI?” An interesting discussion then followed which we all found very useful as it was good for us to re-think about what we are trying to do and where we are going. It was agreed that the aim should be printed on the front of the newsletter (actually page 4 instead, Ed). This would probably be the sentence in the constitution that states that our aim is to promote Iyengar Yoga to the public in our area.
As far as putting this aim into action it was agreed that ORIYI should be disseminating information regarding Iyengar Yoga to students, potential students and the general public. So how do we do this? There has been some bad and inaccurate press regarding yoga and as there are many different forms of yoga it was felt that we should somehow present an accurate picture of what Iyengar Yoga is as the public are understandably confused. However, there are certain difficulties with regard to this: there are not enough Iyengar teachers around to cope with the demand for teaching so over advertising would lead to problems. However, it was agreed to look into the possibility of a press release locally (Philip Brown to action) and perhaps a local radio interview (Jon Hunt to action). Philip Brown is also going to look into the development of the web site.
One of the main purposes of our Institute is the organising of Yoga Days and we obviously do this but it would be nice to see a few more general students coming along, the days tend to be filled up with teachers and trainee teachers
Merger or LOYA and BKSIYTA
The subject of the two national Iyengar Yoga Associations coming together was briefly touched upon as this will obviously affect the future of ORIYI, but as the details of what the affect will be are not known yet we cannot plan for what our future role will be with regard to the new combined association.
Date of next ORIYI AGM
The June Yoga Day in Newbury.
