ORIYI Constitution Questionnaire Results - Martin Colston
ORIYI News - May 2003
Page 6 - ORIYI Constitution Questionnaire Results
Firstly, thank you to all 51 of you who took the time to fill in the questionnaire. Many of you said it was actually quite difficult to answer because you found the wording of the constitution hard to fathom, and Sheila and Ally even went to the trouble (many thanks) of producing a re-drafting suggestion that would be clearer! Despite these difficulties, I think the results make a few things clear with the result that we should probably amend the ORIYI constitution once the IYA is fully up and running. Then we can ensure ours dovetails with theirs with no overlaps or contradictions.

The four things we think are most important – clauses 1, 2, 6 and 7 - are also the ones we are best at delivering. So that’s a good start, and reflects a common view that we should focus on what we’re good at and do it better, and leave the rest alone to to someone else.

Several of you pointed out that teacher training, which forms part of clause 2, is the sole remit of the BKSIYTA (soon to be the IYA) and should therefore be deleted from the ORIYI constitution. Many people also felt that clause 3 – about research into the therapeutic effects of Iyengar yoga – was far too big a topic for a small regional institute, and should be left either to the IYA or the institute in Pune.

The comments many of you made had a couple of other strong themes:

  • more yoga days, some aimed more at beginners and some “master-classes”
  • more efforts to attract new students, with ideas like free introductory lessons with demonstrations of what can be achieved with time and practice; or road-shows
